This thesis aims to investigate prenuclear glides in Hong Kong Cantonese. The study introduces the unique labialized velar stops in Hong Kong Cantonese and illustrates potential issues in the Jyutping romanization system. We aim to provide experimental evidence as a basis for addressing the controversy surrounding glides in Hong Kong Cantonese. Using electromagnetic articulography, this study experiments on native speakers of Hong Kong Cantonese to explore differences in articulatory characteristics among labialized velar stops (C'G), glides (CG), and vowels (CV), particularly focusing on the gestural coordination stiffness. The findings reveal that these articulatory features did not effectively differentiate among these three categories. These results disagree with the assumed distinctions between labialized velar stops and glides as well as vowels in Jyutping transliteration. If the Jyutping system reflects native speakers' phonological intuitions, subsequent research may need to consider other potential differences between glides and vowels.
