The purpose of this study was to examine the predictability of cognitive styles and stress coping strategies on career adaptability. In this study, career adaptability included aspects of career concern, career control, career curiosity, and career confidence; four cognitive styles embraced field dependence, divergence, reflectivity, and image preference; and stress coping strategies consisted of positive problem-focused, negative problem-focused, positive emotion-focused, and negative emotion-focused coping strategies. A questionnaire survey method was employed. A total of 502 effective samples were retrieved from ninth grade students in 19 classes of 7 junior schools in Northern, Central, and Southern Taiwan.
The main findings of the study are: (1) The interaction effects of gender and aspect were significant for cognitive styles, stress coping strategies, and career adaptability. (2) Divergent styles and reflective styles were positively correlated to career adaptability. (3) Positive problem-focused coping strategy and positive emotion-focused coping strategy were positively correlated to career adaptability, but negative emotion-focused coping strategy was negatively correlated to career adaptability. (4) Divergent style, positive problem-focused coping strategy, positive emotion-focused coping strategy, and negative emotion-focused coping strategy together could significantly predict career adaptability.
