This study adopts the method of action research to research upon 27 third graders, the subjects of the study, in one class of Hsing-Fu Elementary School. It chiefly probes into the outcomes of integrating the good words and deeds of Chinese sages and wise men into reading instruction regarding improving the reading abilities and morality of third and fourth graders. Moreover, the study investigates into difficulties that teachers faced and problem-solving methods to further comprehend the growth and change of teachers in this research. Based on the ten core values of moral character of Hsing-Fu Elementary School, the researcher made up ten stories about the good words and deeds of Chinese sages and wise men to conduct the study in the two classes “reading instruction,” and “school administration and remedial teaching.” Before the courses, the researcher gave the students a pre-test pertaining to their reading knowledge of Chinese sages and wise men. Next, during the ten-week class, the researcher told the students the stories related to the good words and deeds of Chinese sages and wise men. Through group discussions, mind map drawing, role playing, clipping and pasting stories in a scrapbook, and creating new endings, the students could comprehend the good words and deeds of Chinese sages and wise men. In addition, the guidance of the researcher also enabled the students to understand the achievements, words and deeds of these sages and learn from them. The students began to follow the examples of sages upon the reading instruction course. Conclusions are induced based on the results and discussions of the study.
1. After integrating the good words and deeds of Chinese sages and wise men into reading instruction, the students' morality has certainly been elevated. 2. After integrating the good words and deeds of Chinese sages and wise men into reading instruction, the students' reading interest has indeed been improved. 3. After the research, the pedagogical knowledge of the researcher, the teacher, has been enhanced. 4. The teaching results of the study can serve as references for the researcher or Hsing -Fu Elementary School in promoting the core education of moral character and in compiling teaching materials for the course.
Last but not the least, this study proposes concrete suggestions for researches upon reading instruction and character education for the third and fourth graders based on the conclusions of the study. |
