This study uses the method of action research along with twenty-eight second graders as an experiment group. The main discussion is about the recent textbook dispersed character recognition teaching integrates with classification character teaching and its efficiencies of increasing not only ability but also interest in character recognition for lower graders. In addition, this study includes the problems teachers faced during teaching and the solutions.
In order to smoothly enter the character recognition lesson, teacher first introduces several basic ideas of common radicals and parts of character in the upper semester. Then, by using ancient characters to produce creative activities, students can be stimulated and interested in learning Chinese characters. In the following semester, the students take the eight-week lessons of textbook classification in character teaching. The procedure of lessons is: teaching new characters in textbook, classifying characters, and returning back to textbook to re-emphasize forms, sounds, and meanings of character. With this process, efficient recognition lesson can be created by adding fun games like riddles, nursery rhymes, etymology, and total physical response (TPR). According to the research results and discussion, the conclusions are as follows:
(1) Textbook classification of character teaching can increase the character knowledge of second graders and effectively decrease the gap between the classmates. (2) Through the various methods of teaching, students can gain interest in learning character by combining games and lives, initiate the positive altitude in self-learning, and develop the concepts of Chinese character structures and the strategies of memorizing them. (3) Learning characters and phrases through the articles can help students establish the recognition of characters. In addition, nursery rhyme can help the better performance students develop early pre-writing ability. (4) Textbook classification of character teaching, combining the advantages of dispersed and classification characters, is the doable and most efficient language teaching method in Taiwan now. (5) Works in small groups along with competitive activities can trigger the learning motivation and enhance the efficiency of teaching.
