Nature writing and the concerning of ecology have become the focal point since the late of seventies. At that time, Taiwan has started its wakening of eco-awareness. Nature writing is a kind of literary works which describing the relationship between people and environment, and the activities of nature and ecology. Hsu Jen-Hsio, a famous nature writing writers, has a different narrative style to other authors. Hsu has been abroad and has taken adventures in wilderness for a long time. After that, he has devoted to concern the natural ecology in Taiwan. The special life experience makes Hsu’s style of writing unique. Meanwhile, Hsu is also the reformer of society. He participates actively in various environmental movements and later established SOW (Society of Wildness) to realize his claims of environmental protection. The theme of this thesis is the study for the topic and writing style of both Hsu Jen-Hsio’s exploring nature writing about abroad and Taiwan. To interpret Hsu’s inspiration of nature and by the discovering he asserts his worry, feeling and protest in a humanism society. In his works, we see how the greed and short-sightedness of human destroy the ecology and environment. In the meantime, by describing the appearance of “live and let live” in native tribes, Hsu tries to arise our introspection and to think the way how we treat our ecological environment. Besides, our prospective of natural caring could also influence our attitudes to nature. “To respect nature and to concern ecology” should be an important and serious issue to all human beings. By works of novel, prose, poetry and photography, diverse literary forms, Hsu transfers his concern and care to natural environment, the wildness. His style of nature writing is not only rich and colorful but also easy to understand. Hsu is a man of erudition in his specialized knowledge. By applying Aldo Leopold’s concepts skillfully, Hsu’s writing is not only the description of ecological environment; it is full of land aesthetic, multi-social care and environmental ethics. Hsu Jen-Hsio’s works express all aspects of his own idea for artistic creation. The nature writing in Taiwan will give a more harmonious blue print for co-existing in this land. Through nature writing, we expect the awareness of this totally profit-minded society could be aroused. |
