Abstract Wen-yong Hou, a well-known physician writer in Taiwan, resigned from the position of the Director of Anesthesiology and associate professor at the National Taiwan University, in order to become a full-time writer. His works skillfully reveal human nature, reflect upon the age-old but unreasonable traditional systems, and criticize the current social culture oriented to utilitarianism and fashion. He analyzes the facts and reasons in a rational manner and faces the readers with true feelings, in an attempt to direct them to the positive thinking via humanistic concern in this imperfect world and point to a kind of more humanized spiritual life. This paper reviews the prose by Hou, and it is organized into 7 chapters. Chapter I “Introduction” states the research motivation, objective, method and current condition. Chapter II “Growth Process of the Wrtier and His Literary Concepts” probes into the background and motivation his writing. It first discusses Hou’s growing background and the times he experienced. Then, it explores Hou’s creative perspectives and literary concepts, thus serving as the reference point for latter discussion. Chapter III “Reflections on Love and Marriage” analyzes his love view as well as his reflection and firm belief about the marriage from his emotional course and works. In Chapter IV “Medical Workplace Experience and Human Reflection”, we can see his humanistic care from various aspects through the analysis on his dilemmas encountered and medical system problems in hospital from a physician’s perspective, as well as the human reflection between physicians and patients, and his exploration of human love. Chapter V “Reflection on Modern Social Culture” explores the course where Hou expects the readers to break away from the triteness and set pattern through “reverse thinking” via the reflection on “mainstream culture” and “educational system”, so as to find the true self and suitable self-fulfilling life path. Chapter VI “Artistic Expression and Unique Value of Hou’s Prose Creation” probes into Hou’s unique perspective as a physician, carries out the rational and emotional profound reflection on society, education, culture and humanity, and builds a seemingly plain but profound art style. Chapter VII “Conclusion” reviews his contributions to Taiwan’s modern prose development comprehensively. By concluding the paper discussion, the readers can know the influences of writer characters, environment and historical background on his creation. Hou’s prose condenses the rational reflections of intellectuals and physicians, proposes the criticism and reflections from various aspects of modern society, intensifies the rational philosophy thinking in the prose, and injects the new visions of “medical writing” and “physician-patient relationship” for modern prose. “Treating the heart is much more important than treat the disease”. Literary creation is another form of treating the heart. The objective for medical science and literature is all based on humanistic care, so Hou’s creation realizes their regression to existence essence.
