The concept of perimeter and area discrimination is an important part of math teaching in elementary school. But students feel hard to learn this part, and also make some mistakes frequently. In this study, I designed some different patterns of perimeter and area , then also asked some 4th and 6th grade students in elementary school to choose the correspondence picture, then describe the difference of these 2 concepts separately.
The result of this study shows that students often describe the concept of perimeter on sides and lines, then focus the definition of area on planars. But the chosen pictures by students were not to confirm with their descriptions of these 2 different concepts. On the other hand, different pattern pictures of perimeter and area choised by students indicates these three following results. Firstly , the performance of 6th grade students were better than 4th grade in selection of pictures and description of the defenitions on perimeters and areas. Secondly, though that 6th grade students do better than 4th grade in the correspondence relationships of perimeter and area pictures selection , they still make mistakes oftenly. Thirdly , there are some points affect the decision of students like square, right angle, symmetry, closed, dotted, coloring, thickness of the frame,etc.Dotted line affects the most among all of them.
