Chunqiu Tong Shuo was finished by Huang Zhong-yan in 1230, and was dedicated to the court in 1236. It was not widespread during the Yuan and the Ming Dynasty until 1680 when Tong Zhi Tang Jing Jie has been published. Since then, scholars began to pay attention to Chunqiu Tong Shuo, and it has been passed down to the present. The book mainly criticized the predecessors’ presupposition of “bāo biǎn” (appraisal) while interpreting Chunqiu and their over reliance on interpretation methods like “Yi Li”. Furthermore, it also stressed the value of reflection and the importance to contemporary politics of Chunqiu. This paper firstly discusses the life of Huang Zhong-yan and the editions of Chunqiu Tong Shuo. Secondly, discusses the development of interpretation methods of Chunqiu scholarship in the Tang and the Song Dynasty and Huang Zhong-yan’s continuation and refutation of them. Finally, outlines the features and the atmosphere of the times of Chunqiu Tong Shuo, and visualizes the situation of the Southern Song Dynasty. Through the study of Chunqiu Tong Shuo, this article observes the development and limit of Chunqiu scholarship and how Confucian scholars presented their views of the political situation by interpreting Chunqiu in the Southern Song Dynasty. We hope this article will help for studies of Chunqiu scholarship in the Southern Song Dynasty. |
