Abstract
This thesis aims to define my self-identity by series paintings of home town scenery. There will be five chapters included: “Introduction”, “Beginning, “Idea”, “Life” as well as ”Conclusion”. This research will integrate my works through college period to graduate study period to discover my nature.
In the first chapter, “Introduction”, I will discuss my first piece of landscape painted in 2007. The motivation of this work is a selfexamination between my mind and the environment. This typical Taiwan landscape aims to develop a mental balance between the environment and myself. The work presents the internal and external consistence.
In the second chapter, “Beginning”, I will investigate the process of style forming. In the first section I will describe how I am attracted by the large scale stele landscape painting in the Northern Song Dynasty. In the second section I will discuss about the artists of Realism, including Jean-François Millet, Andrew Nowell Wyeth and Antonio López Garcia. Their works are amiable apparently, but reveal plenty of deep meanings. These artists show their feelings by the interaction between the spaces and memories that inspired me ways to present my feelings. In the third section I will discuss aboutan artist of romanticism - Caspar David Friedrich whose paintings are not only integrate religious or narrative topics but alsothe dusky andmysterious atmosphere. They inspired the ideas of my drawings.
In the third chapter, Idea, I will discuss the topic of “soul”. It will make reference to the definition of “Idea” which was formed by Plato and Socrates. This helps me to find out the meaning of my works. In the second section I will investigate the heroes of landscapes. This aims to show the nobleness and reality by the size of my works. In the last section I will describe how to paint a landscape and how to use skills of thin-dye and transfer-printing to reveal the scale-ornamented / smooth pictures.
In the fourth chapter, “Life”, I will explain how I made the series of “Soul Landscapes” since the year of 2007. In the first section, I’ll explain the distinctstyles of the paintings that were influenced by my mental states as painting. In the second section I will introduce the series of “On the way of a Border” in 2013. These works are related to the surroundings of my hometown Houlong at Mioli. I try to reflect the topic of interactions between human beings and environment as well as try to identify myself.
In the last chapter I will emphasize how important it is for me to be an artist to express the love and emotion through paintings. So far I am still looking for the originality of my creation and clarifying the meaning of my drawings. I know there is a long way to go. I will definitelykeep on moving.
