Abstract This thesis of artistic creation discussed my artwork series between “Erogenous zone” (2008) and “Wax Strips” (2013), which focused on hair, attempting to extend our understanding from its usage as an artistic media to the taboo on hair. Chapter 1, “Introduction”, explained the motivation for creation and summarized the objectives, methodology and scope of research. Chapter 2 was named “Origin of taboos”. In section I, the reasons leading to our rejection were discussed in light of human history and customs. Section II was about the relationship between hair and the breakage of social limitations on sex and desire. The social factors behind was also elaborated. Section III focused on the awareness of the female body through recognition of our taboo on hair and the evolution of the awareness. Chapter 3, “Skin Contact”, narrated the concepts behind the creation and techniques of using hair as a media. In Section I, I explained the relationship between hair and self out of my experience. Section II illustrated the causes and formats of artistic expression by overcoming the taboos of hair. In Section III the progression from taboos on hair to self-awareness was discussed through my artwork. In Section IV, analyzing from style and content of hair creations, the process of using hair as a media in different times was elaborated. Chapter 4, "Body perception", described through 4 series of art works in 3 periods. From the two dimensional flat human passion to the three-dimensional physical object of hair, I expressed the sexual arousal of hair in human body imaged in the whole dimension and space. At last, I extended based on skin touch and own experience on taboos towards hair. I investigated the form and content by series of artwork including "erogenous zones", hair "implanted" series, "Touch off desire" series and "Wax strips". Chapter 5, "Conclusion", I answered research questions taboo between hair and work, but also looked forward to the future direction of the work. |
