Multiplayer online game is the hot topic for virtual leadership and teamwork recently. Most of researches focus on massively multiplayer online role-playing games, but there is a genre of game called multiplayer online battle arena games (MOBAs) which is extremely famous without attention. Comparing to other game sorts, MOBAs offer lower autonomy, more frustration and challenges (Johnson, Nacke, & Wyeth, 2015), coupled with a high degree of task orientation, it is appropriate to explore for team leadership and team decision-making issues.
This study adopt a qualitative research methods and target the most popular MOBAs, League of Legends (LOL) as the research objective, interviewing six high level players of LOL. Four of them are amateurs, two of them are active duty pros. By induction and consolidation, I develop a MOBAs team decision decisiondecision decision-making and leadership model.
This research find out that there is no specific leader in the MOBAs leadership model. Team members shared the responsibility of leadership and power of decision, it is similar to the phenomenon of shared leadership. When the team want to execute a strategy, the members of team will quickly discuss and influence each other interactively, performing a consensus plan. The key factor which influence individual’s power of decision is game role, because it relate to the capability of players on certain game environment.
