In the 1980s as U.S. and Taiwan governments passed intellectual property rights to put through research institutions or enterprises bill. In recent years, regardless of United States or Taiwan entrepreneurial universities are increasing rapidly. With reduced government funding, forcing schools to find another funds to support research. Through school technology licensing is the most direct and stable source of funding. Industry-university cooperation, technology licensing are the ways towards becoming an entrepreneurial university. This paper go through the understanding of the theory of entrepreneurial university, and research two different cases to understand whether the theory is consistent with the process from research university to entrepreneurial university. In order to improve Taiwans’ Universities current inadequate I tried to understand the different practice of different schools. In this study, I focus on comparative case studies between Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to understand their process of becoming an entrepreneurial university. This paper concludes by research findings, discussing applications for theory and practice, limitations and future research.
