本文出自作者在2013年九月,於美國舊金山灣區(San Francisco Bay Area)為期三個月的田野調查。整份研究圍繞著灣區的加州大學柏克萊分校(University of California, Berkeley),滾雪球式的尋訪、邀約與集會,總共訪談了二十二位年輕台灣移民,並累積了三個月的參與觀察經驗。移民研究裡的跨國主義(transnationalism)及移民世代(immigrant generation)作為理論概念骨幹,並以研究對象的移動軌跡與日常生活為血肉,本文試圖理解這群舊金山灣區的年輕台灣移民,他們身為移民而複雜動態的認同形構(identity formation)樣貌與過程:首先,因著移民軌跡的不同,以及美國社會的制度設計與文化脈絡,在柏克萊大學校園裡,我們會看到以世代為界線分化而成的一代、二代與1.5代三個世代群體;與此同時,世代界線其實有其動態可滲透之處,世代認同其實如一張光譜,光譜背後所反射的是移民們家庭、族裔性與生活風格等向度的相互交錯;最後,這群台灣年輕移民的命運其實與美國經濟衰退、亞洲經濟發展這些資本主義的結構性變遷牽連在一起,跨國、甚至持續不斷的跨國移動成為這群年輕台灣移民維繫社會流動的一個重要手段。
