This study explores artistic interpretations where plants are endowed with life and spiritualized. Through the experience of everyday sketching, the author observes the detailed changes of plants, ranging from their roots to the tip of their shoots and even in their leaves, and transforms the observations into materials for artistic creation. By creating art paintings, the author expects to express how she interprets the appearance of plants and what she associates their growth processes with. This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 “Introduction” includes the creation background, motivation, research objectives, and methodology. In addition, it briefly introduces how this study can be extended, and defines the terminology used in the study. Chapter 2 “Animism” investigates the development of animism to date and the related thinking, and draws examples from films or books that use animism to develop stories or topics. Subsequently, the chapter explains how the author utilizes animism to imagine spiritualized giant trees. Chapter 3 “The Art of Art Painting” describes the origin and importance of art painting, discussing how art painters in history perceived and presented nature sketching. In addition, the chapter explains the author’s methods of sketching and concepts of landscape sketching, and extends the experience accumulated from sketching to the thematic and formal analysis of her works in the following chapter. Chapter 4 analyzes the author’s use of picture composition methods and texture strokes in her works, introduces related modes of expression in history, and then explores her psychological states during the creation process. Subsequently, the chapter discusses the author’s media and techniques of expression in her works. Chapter 5 “Creative Work Analysis” analyzes the author’s works created during her master’s study from the aspects of themes and modes of expression. Chapter 6 “Conclusion” presents the author’s achievements in creating art and future directions for creative activities. In future creative activities, the author will continue sketching as practice and a source of inspiration, and use her own background and psychological states to explore the topic of life-experience accumulation. By doing so, she attempts to deliberate on the deeper meanings in life and art through artistic creation.
