This research aimed to explore the process of career adaptability among adults who are middle children, how the original families affected the career adaptability of middle-born-adults, and how the characters shaped by their original families. This research was constituted by qualitative research and purposive sampling. The four samples was recruited from age 25 to 44 middle-born-adults who have more than 5-year working experiences, living in three-children families, and both have a younger siblings and a same-gender older sibling at the same time. This study was conducted by collecting life stories through narrative inquiry and semi-structured depth interviews. The data was analyzed based on “holistic-content” and supplemented by ”categorical-content” approach.
After analyzing the major plots of their life stories, research shows that there are three main characters among these middle-born-adults in their career adaptability process: 1. Childhood: Lack-of-concern inferiority complex, the sense of material-deficiency. 2. Adolescence: Seeking for freedom and independence, keeping a gentlemen’s relationship social performance. 3. Adulthood: Focusing on the working value more than material feedbacks, longing for being recognized and needed, advocating stable lives and enjoy slight adventures.
Additionally, the influences from the original families to the career adaptability of these participants are as follows: 1. Positive or negative parenting experiences affected the stability of career-confidence. 2. Positive or negative experiences of sibling-relationships influence the attitude towards career cooperation and competitions. 3. The connecting ways of the families helped them to adapt interpersonal relationships in working places, which usually being the roles of cooperation and communication.
Furthermore, the characters shaped by the original families which affected the career adaptability of the participants included: 1. Eager to be valued and recognized, thriving to show themselves. 2. Highly self-disciplined and create positive career appearances. 3. Cautious interpersonal attitudes in order to be trustworthy.
According to the research results, adults who are middle children have less career confidence and the sense of career-controlling, but have higher career cooperation. If they can make good uses of their advantages, they can get better quality of career adaptability. Based on the research process and results, the limitations of this study and suggestions would be listed in the end.
