The title of this thesis is "My Emotional Doppelganger". The formation of the emotional doppelganger comes from my associations with objects and situations in daily life. This writing combines theory with discussion of related artists to examine my works between 2020 and 2023. There will be six chapters: In Chapter I, “Introduction” the research motivation, objectives, content, and methodology will be illustrated. The motivation for this research originated from the feeling of loneliness that arose during the COVID-19 quarantine period. I realized that my creative method involved projecting unsatisfied emotions onto soft objects in my surroundings, based on Francis Bacon's quote that "art is the man-made reality". Through theoretical exploration, I explored the dreamlike qualities present in works of Symbolism and Surrealism and how lonely emotions can be manifested in reality through artistic creation. I also investigated the connection between medium and concept, including creases, skin, and dander. In Chapter II, “The Development of Thought”. I’ll apply Giorgio de Chirico’s painting, "The Street of Mysteries and Sorrows" from the metaphysical art movement as a starting point. I will explore the atmosphere of melancholy and mystery in paintings. I’ll alsostudy dreamlike qualities that were presented in symbolism and Surrealism in Western art history. Using visual implications as Symbolic research, I’ll extend the meaning of elements in the painting to mythical implications inspired by the artist Odilon Redon’s use of eyes in his paintings. In Chapter III, “ Creative Concept”, I’ll pursue in my works and creative process as well as the emotional observation in my creative practice using the keyword “emotional doppelganger” as my research direction. I’ll also refer to works by artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, René François Ghislain Magritte, Leonor Fini, Méret Elisabeth Oppenheim, Giovanni Segantini, Edward Hopper, El Greco, Balthus, Miyako Ishiuchi, and Alberto Giacometti for my own work's emotional expression. In Chapter IV, I’ll analyze the execution of my works, including the creative vocabulary in my “transfer printing technique”, “crease”, and “object association”. This is further subdivided into the topics of "hiding and creases, “imagery”, and “objects”. In Chapter V, I’ll analyze my works based on four systems: “room and body”, “imagery of the body”, and “created forms”. Finally, In Chapter VI, “Conclusion”, I’ll provide an overall synthesis of the research and creative work had been conducted during the graduate program stage. Additionally, I will incorporate the analysis of dream-like sensations and eye symbols to integrate the forms and concepts expressed in the artworks throughout this paper. |
