Purpose: This study investigated the differences in balance ability and gait between high and low score TFMS and FM1 runners. Method: 32 runners with running habit were recruited in this study. They were divided into groups by the total score of functional movement screening (TFMS) and the first type of functional movement (FM1), and then static balance ability and gait were tested by foot pressure treadmill. Descriptive analysis and independent samples t-test were used to perform various tests between groups. Results: Balance: In the TFMS grouping, there was no significant difference in the X-axis displacement, Y-axis displacement and COP shaking area; while in the FM1 grouping, the X-axis displacement and COP shaking area in the FM1 high-risk group were significantly larger than those in the FM1 general group (p < .05). Running gait parameters: Both groups indicated that stride length and double step length in the high-risk group were significantly smaller than those in the general group (p < .05); foot rotation angle and stride width did not differ significantly. Running gait cycle: There was no significant difference between the left and right stance % and the left and right swing %. Conclusion: It is particularly beneficial to evaluate the balance ability of runners by FMS sub-score; the double step length and stride length of runners in the high-risk group are significantly smaller than those in the general group, indicating that the runners in the high-risk group have weaker lower limb muscle strength and a higher risk of sports injuries than the runners in the general group, stride width is affected by physical mechanisms, so it is not the main indicator in the assessment; runners in the high-risk group tend to have worse bilateral symmetry. It is suggested that in the future, researchers should use the FMS sub-score to evaluate the balance ability of runners. When discussing gait parameters, priority should be given to step length and stride length, and stride width should be excluded. It is hoped that gait variability and bilateral symmetry were used for in-depth study of the gait cycle in the future.
