Tourism activities have an impact on the lives of locals when a place becomes a tourist attraction. Recently, tourism impact studies have shown that tourism has both positive and negative effects on the economic well-being of tourism destinations, as well as a variety of other environmental, social, and cultural consequences. Slovenia is considered as one of the most sustainable countries in the world. However, due to increased number of international tourists in recent years, there is a concern that tourism growth may negatively impact on environmental, economic and socio-cultural environment in the region. Therefore, evaluating the stakeholders’ perspective on tourism impact is important to asses the quality of live in a destination itself. This study aims to provide residents’ insight on tourism impact about environmental, economic, and socio-cultural effects in Ljubljana and Bled.
The purpose of this research is to understand the current state of tourism impact in Ljubljana and Bled from residents perspective. The data was collected after literature review using qualitative methods by conducting an in-depth interviews.
The results disclosed that the inhabitants of the tourist destinations of Bled and Ljubljana are satisfied with the development of tourism in their area. The development of tourism increases the awareness of environmental protection, tourism revenues have a positive impact on the development of both places, and it strengthens the cultural awareness and the sense of local community. Some controversy arises in Bled, where due to small size of the town and the unfavorable topography could lead to inconvenience in the future in the event of increased mass tourism. Further managerial recommendations can be found in Chapter 4 and 5.
