The title of this thesis is “Away from Ways of Perception - Art Works by Wei Peng,” which could be regarded as an attempt as a contemporary artist who works on drawing, to investigate possibilities of dialogue in a genealogy of drawing that is simple yet also complicated. In this study, I try to build a new perceptual experience and opportunity for myself and the viewer; I also work on drawing as a way of thinking about painting process. By doing so, I unfasten and reverse regular impressions based on immediate vision through the visual experiences in my daily observations of trivial things. Drawings I made between 2019 and 2022 will also be compiled and sorted into two distinct creative periods.
In Chapter I , “Introduction,” I’ll present the motivation and objectives of my work from graduate study, research methods as well as art projects. The focus will be on drawing as a conceptual way for the making ofart during this period, which involves a transition from drawing to spatial art and then to a dialogue with space, paving the way for the next step. In Chapter II, “A Drawing Platform,” I’ll describe the study of drawing from two-dimensional practice to spatial installation. I’ll also interpret related terms in the context of drawing and describe how I became an artist practicing contemporary drawing, along with examples of research and works by contemporary artists to investigate different perspectives. In Chapter III, “Expanding the boundaries of creation,” I’ll analyze the way of my practice in drawing and creative new forms as an approach toward my works for this period. In Chapter IV, “Run Away from Drawing,” I’ll elaborate my works and the arrangement of the concept about “Blank” in my solo exhibition in 2022. In Chapter V, “Conclusion,” I’ll summarize my current works on the basis of my research and works from graduate school.
