詮釋是為了理解存在的意義，此過程也是一種存在的價值表現。文化資產的詮釋更是一門複雜的課題，詮釋視角將決定我們用甚麼態度來看待（保存）它。在諸多文化資產的類型中，「負面遺產」（negative heritage）的保存多以具備「文化反省之價值」而存在。其中一種是集中營形式的種族議題，例如：奧茲維辛集中營或羅本島的歷史場域凸顯特定的單一件帶來負面遺緒的處理。另一種則是監獄或囚禁空間類型，例如：澳洲費里曼圖監獄則是在多個監獄場址構成下被列入世界遺產，作為殖民時代下的矯正機構卻也具備多重事件構成的爭議與影響。因此身處在現代都市中具有歷史意涵的監獄，除非具備強烈的紀念價值，否則社會大眾的成見很容易會掩蓋其負面特質下的歷史脈絡，而過去的懲罰與痛苦等情緒的再現更需要謹慎處理，這也彰顯了價值詮釋的重要性。
本研究論述將分成兩個主題進行文獻分析，分別為價值與詮釋之間的關係，以及負面遺產的詮釋與呈現手法。首先，透過國際間如何定義遺產價值，以及詮釋遺產所關注的面向與發展趨勢，並延續前段發現多著重在多元的體驗感受作為詮釋手法之共同性進行價值傳遞，特別在負面遺產，詮釋方給的敘事視角與營造的敘事情緒均影響了訪客如何進行理解，也是將其負面遺緒轉為正向理解的途徑。後續透過個案以「價值作為詮釋之影響因子」之概念，分析詮釋工作如何影響體驗形式與訪客的經驗創造，檢視各詮釋下的服務項目與價值間的關係與應用，最後提出相同類型的歷史場所在詮釋工作上的建議。

The purpose of interpretation is to comprehend the meaning of existence; its process is also a manifestation of the existence of value, and interpreting cultural heritage is more challenging. The perspective of interpretation will determine people's preservation approach. Among the various categories of cultural heritage, the preservation of "negative heritage" exists primarily for "reflecting value". One focuses on the treatment of a specific event that evokes negative emotions, such as the historical site of Auschwitz-Birkenau State or Robben Island, while the other focuses on the type of prison, such as Fremantle Prison of Australia. As a British colonial-era correctional institution, it also has controversies and influences caused by multiple events. Therefore, public prejudices can obscure the contexts underlying the negative characteristics of a historical prison in a modern city, and emotions regarding punishment and pain must be managed with care, highlighting the significance of interpretive value.
This study would dissect document analysis into two focal themes: the interplay between cultural value and interpretation and the nuanced interpretation of negative heritage. This exploration would be facilitated through the lens of international heritage value definitions and the trajectory of heritage interpretation evolution. This study uncovered the prevalence of multisensory engagement as the interpretive commonality, with pronounced prominence observed in the context of negative heritage. The significance of both the narrative perspective and the emotional impact of interpreters in influencing visitors' understanding has become apparent. This process has additionally provided a transformative pathway for converting negative emotions into positive attitudes. This study has examined the influence of interpretation on the presentation and configuration of the experiential encounter, with a particular focus on the concept of "value as a determinant of interpretation." Furthermore, the symbiotic linkage and practical application of each service element and value have been thoroughly examined. The culmination of this study has involved the provision of interpretive recommendations that are specifically tailored to similar historical sites within the same category.
