According to statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, societal changes have led to a trend of people marrying later or not at all, making long-term relationships more common and emphasizing the need to understand the psychological mechanisms influencing these relationships. Literature indicates that romantic nostalgia—sentimental longing for one’s partner or the relationship itself—positively predicts relationship satisfaction and has the potential to repair relationships. This study investigates whether romantic nostalgia is a resource or a risk in maintaining long-term romantic relationships. Using the method of questionnaire survey, the study measures and analyzes how romantic nostalgia moderates the impact of relationship duration on relationship evaluation. The results show that within approximately ten years or in the absence of marriage, higher levels of romantic nostalgia positively predict relationship evaluation. However, without controlling for confounding variables, long-term relationships might harm the relationship, with romantic nostalgia significantly moderating this effect: the negative impact of relationship duration on relationship evaluation only appears in those with high levels of romantic nostalgia. Some findings challenge previous literature on nostalgia in romantic relationships. Nevertheless, after accounting for relationship length and confounding variables, romantic nostalgia still positively enhances relationship evaluation. Finally, the study offers suggestions for future research and practical applications for couples and individual counseling in romantic relationships.
