The purpose of this study was to understand parents' perspectives on the implementation and importance of self-determination for children with special needs in the family context, as well as to analyze whether different background variables influenced their perceptions. The study employed a questionnaire survey and collected data from parents of children aged 0-6 with special needs in the Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli regions of Taiwan. A total of 335 completed questionnaires were returned, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and multivariate analysis of variance. The following findings were obtained:
1.Participating parents rated the importance of self-determination as ranging from moderately important to extremely important.
2.Participating parents reported providing opportunities for the implementation of self-determination ranging from occasional (50%) to always (100%).
3.There was a moderate correlation between the parents’ perceptions of the importance of self-determination and its implementation.
4.Parents’perceptions of the importance of self-determination were significantly related to parent variables such as “number of children”, “number of children * average monthly income”, “number of children * monthly income * education level”, “number of children * monthly income * family structure”, and “monthly income * parenting style.” In addition, child background variables such as “degree of disability” and “placement status” were significantly related to the parents’perceptions of the importance of self-determination.
5.Parents’perceptions of the implementation of self-determination were significantly related to parent variables such as “education level * family structure”, “education level * monthly income * number of children”, and “family structure * parenting style * number of children.” Furthermore, child background variables such as “degree of disability”, “placement status”, “age * degree of disability”, “degree of disability * placement status”,and “age * degree of disability * placement situation” were significantly related to parents’ perceptions of the implementation of self-determination.
