This study discusses and explores the meaning and the implementation of the gender equality education. By integrating the picture books for gender equality into the visual arts courses, this study looks into the performance and the reactions of the 2nd grade elementary school students to such integrating course.
This study applies document analysis and action research methods, and targets the 2nd grade students in this researcher’s own elementary school. The integrating courses have five teaching units and fifteen teaching activities. The teaching methods investigated were introduction to picture books, learning through practicing and experiencing activities, experience sharing, and visual arts creativity. Analysis was conducted on the records for the study lists, the list of lessons learned, the works completed, the teaching observation feedback, the parental feedbackand the daily log on teaching reflection.
The results of the aforementioned combined study are as following: 1. Through the integration of gender equality picture books into each experiencing activities and art creativities, the students learned to identify the concept of gender equality with themselves; such integration also enriched the topics and the contents of visual arts creativity. 2. Through the analysis of documents as well as constant revisions and corrections during teaching process, the researcher develops a set of course based on gender equality picture books to be integrated into the visual arts classes for the 1st and 2nd grade students. 3. The application of integrating picture books into the visual arts teaching allows the teachers to have a better grasp of the teaching topic and the learning content, and it’s also more suitable for the physical and mental development of the lower grade students in elementary school. Each designed activity in the course shows the enhancement of students’ human interaction and cooperative communication skills. By employing different media materials and ways of performing, the students’ interests in creativity were extended beyond the duration of such course.
Based on the results, the researcher makes further suggestions for some educational applications and future research.
