This artist’s statement focuses on the creative direction of my work, which is driven by scenes in nostalgic childhood memories, with a core structure of retaining memories.
Drawing materials from existing old buildings, I attempt to project my own childhood sentiments by rearranging dynamics between objects through image recomposition and presenting them through oil paintings. Working with themes regarding old buildings, I created a childhood scene that is a mix of fantasy and reality, hoping to provide a place for summoning past memories. However, as I repeat this creative process, it gradually dawned on me that childhood memories cannot be recreated. This realization prompted me to reflect upon and adjust my customary creative techniques to match the changes in my understanding of memories. Through this statement, I record works I created between 2018 and 2021 as a graduate student, which covers the creative transition between four series - storing memories, recomposing memories, elapsed memories, and memories left behind.
This thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter 1, Introduction, covers research motivation and purpose as well as research methods and scope to illustrate emotional projection led by personal experiences. Chapter 2, Theoretical Basis, covers relevant elements used throughout my work, as well as a list of artists that inspired my creative techniques. Chapter 3, Creative Concept and Painting Methods, is a dissection of my creative method and process. Chapter 4, Analysis and Interpretation, goes over series of work and their format while analyzing the shift in focus between series. Chapter 5, Conclusion, reviews and reflects upon existing research results and proposes future creative prospects.
