This study aims to explore the relationships among inhibitory control, theory of mind, and moral reasoning about promise in young children. The participants of the study were 141 children aged from three to six years old, recruited from two public preschools, one quasi-public preschool and one after-school care center in Hsinchu. The collected data were analyzed with the descriptive statistics, and the referential statistics of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-tests, Pearson product-moment correlation, hierarchical regression, and path analysis. The results showed significant age differences in inhibitory control, theory of mind, and moral reasoning about the promise. As children grew older, their performance on inhibitory control, theory of mind, and moral reasoning about promise improved. However, no sex difference was found. By using Pearson product-moment correlation, each social cognition abilities of inhibitory control and theory of mind and age were significantly correlated. Furthermore, with the hierarchical regression and path analysis, results showed that theory of mind was the best predictor on moral reasoning about promise. In addition, during the situation of promise breaking, the majority of children chose to be honest, and a minority of five to six-year-old children were able to provide reasons for understanding deceptive behavior in the context of a promise breaking. By conducting this preliminary exploration of moral reasoning in the context of promise behavior, this study provides insights for parental child rearing and early childhood education practitioners’ child behavior guidance.
