In recent years, college students committing suicide has become frequently, however, investments had found out that there were lots of obstacles in the practice of suicide prevention. This made. researcher consider whether there are more ways to assist front-line mental health counselors to triage effectively.
Literatures had shown that people with suicide risk would express their emotions and reveal suicidal ideation through blogs, there are also studies using semantic analysis to explore the contents of articles, which inspire researcher to find out if it is possible to detect college students’ degree of suicide risk from online articles.
The purpose of this study is to invest whether the analysis of online emotional articles can be used as a method to detect the degree of suicide crisis among college students, and to know the impacts of variables towards the degree of suicide risk, such as hopelessness, the experience of maltreatment, the experience of bully, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belonging. The samples are 2220 emotional articles on the mood board of social media Dcard, the research methods are the test of homogeneity proportions and Logistic regression analysis.
Results showed that five variables all significantly related to the and could predict degree of suicide risk. Furthermore, hopelessness, the experience of maltreatment, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belonging can discriminate no suicidal risk and low suicidal risk; hopelessness, the experience of maltreatment, the experience of bully and thwarted belonging can discriminate low suicidal risk and high suicidal risk;. When more variables are detected in the article, the degree of suicidal risk of the author of the article is higher.
The study found out that content analysis of articles can be used as an effective strategy to predict the degree of suicide risk. It can be used as a mean to improve the efficiency of suicide prevention and can assist mental health counselors to find people who are potentially in need.
