Abstract
This study aims to explore the process, the problems and the solutions of first grade students’ adjustment in preschool. This study also finds out the factors that affect students’ school adjustment. By the case study method, the s tudy adopts participant observation, interviews and document collection to investigate the first grade students’ adjustment situation in the first school semester, from September 2021 to January 2022. The author employed triangulation method to analyze the data. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Students’ adjustment process: As for emotion regulation, few students have separation anxiety. Most of them can wait patiently and adjust their emotion voluntarily. As for self-care skills, students can eat by themselves and are willing to taste different kinds of food. In addition, most of them can put on and take off clothes and shoes by themselves. They can also express their need of toileting. As for social interaction, students can follow the class rules and the game rules. They try to communicate with peers and ask help from teachers. They observe others’ behavior and adjust theirs. 2. Students solve their adjustment problems by self-reminding, self-talking, imitation and observation. Teachers apply positive encouragement, reward systems, picture book stories and problem discussion to help student fit in. Parents shows patience and tolerance to deal with children’s emotion problems. They help to adjust the schedule and establish rules to ease them. 3. The factors that affect students’ school adjustment includes students’ language ability, concentration, personalities, parenting beliefs, birth order, family types, teacher-student relationship, peer relationship and school environment. Base on the findings of the case study, some suggestions for preschool, preschool educators and parents are offered.
