Abstract
It is a traditional problem to integrate the tasks between designers, engineers, marketing people in the new product development process. The study examines the design-driven platform (DDP) initiated by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in 2010, which can solve this traditional problem. This research proposes the research framework of DDP, including four design function stages: discover, define, develop, and deliver. The study selects three successful cases and illustrates these cases by the proposed DDP framework. The results reveal that key success factors for operating DPP including: (1) proven technology value in the market, (2) the synergy of platform operating mechanisms, and (3) a suitable platform execution process. The study concludes that DDP facilitates new product development process efficiently and effectively. And the interpreters, future scenario and needs scouting, technology value proposition analysis, and multidisciplinary co-creation are features of the DDP differentiation. Finally, some managerial implications for developing a workable design-driven platform are suggested.
