It is gradually realized that not only the technical functions of products that can make competitiveness strong, but the power of design. How to design the products, so that products and consumers can recognize more and be satisfied to their needs that different to technical functional using purposes. Verganti proposed the concept of design driven innovation, hoping that the company can pay attention to the work designers are doing, and let the designer independently explore the possibilities of design innovation in the market. However, the design language interpreted by designers are mostly subjective and needs some objective data to help to understand.
Designers need to investigate market demand during the fuzzy front-end period, but these are often time-consuming and labor-intensive. With the advent of the information technology age, "AI", "Big Data" and "Cloud" become common language. However the improve on the product design level with these kinds of technologies are rarely heard. The fuzzy front end of new product development is full of many noises and uncertainties that need to be screened. This is the pain point that information technology may help solve. This study tries to explore how big data can affect products design through the A research institute's medical glasses design case for case analysis, they use the emotional design database in the front-end research, to help make the appearance of the design.
Through case studies, this study found that with the help of key information technologies, big data can indeed become a effective tool, especially in the market research, to help designers understand the market opportunities of product design. Moreover, this study found that it can be the tool of communication between the designers and the firms because of the objective data representation, reduce the doubts about the design black box proposal and make designers more independently on their road to design innovation.
