In recent years, we have seen the increasing importance of entrepreneurial university and engaged scholarship in characterizing the day-to-day activities in the world-wide ivory towers. This tendency, in turn, has given rise to institutional pressures facing by professors and researchers who need to, at worst, choose between research excellence and industrial application or, at best, search for a balanced level of engaged scholarship. The purpose of this project then is to address this dilemma of scholarship, now common to most Taiwanese university professors. On the theoretical side, we will draw on Stoke (1997) to classify the university workers into different types, based upon which will examine their motivations and behaviors. On the theoretical side, we will draw on a qualitative case study, choosing Tsing Hua University. Our research should provide important implication for research on entrepreneurial university, university-industry collaboration, academic work, as well as implications for funding policy and scholarly administration.
