The tale of Lin Tou Sister is a Taiwanese ghost story which runs a long course from a remote source. Since the reign of Emperor Guangxu, the tale of Lin Tou Sister has been told by people as folklore, recorded by scholars, and adapted by writers. Recently, lots of movies, songs, comic books and board games cooperated by different fields were released. Along with the adaptions, the tale of Lin Tou Sister is considered to cross time and space, creating much more meanings besides the lesson of “a bad penny always comes back”. Taking different versions adapted to the tale of Lin Tou Sister for example, this paper focuses on “border-crossing writing” of the tale and give textual analysis to explore issues of literary genres, space-time and gender, including strategies of writing, cross-strait relations and oppression under patriarchy. Summarizing the study of literary genres, space-time and gender, and return to the proposition of “border-crossing writing,” this paper points out the positive meanings of the tale of Lin Tou Sister, including introspection reflected by the change of writing strategies, different processes between Cross-Straits relations along with the historical destiny of Taiwan, and the start of female self-awareness. Being a classic Taiwanese ghost story, the tale of Lin Tou Sister has been not only transformed to cultural heritage in the process of continuous creation, but also sparkled during the cooperation of different fields in modern society, leading people to review the past, gaze at the present and look forward to the future of Taiwan.
