This thesis focuses on the production process of manga magazine/platform Creative Comic Collection, and relationship networks behind producing procedures. In particular, this thesis is concerned with Creative Comic Collection editors’ work and connections with other actors in relationship networks.
In 2009, the first edition of Creative Comic Collection was published as a research report; and later in 2020, the format of this publication has been transformed into an online digital platform for Taiwanese manga. Including changes on publication format, employment units, and institute strategies, causes above interfered in the process of publication production, and further resulted in changing relationship networks. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to explore how actors(editors) show their agency, and endeavor to find more spaces for “tactics in space of the others” among changing relationship networks in cultural production field.
Through examining actors’ connections in changing relationship networks, following questions are considered: 1. How do editors balance the needs from institutes strategies and personal tastes by allocating contents in Creative Comic Collection? 2. Besides manga publication, would there be any other results possibly produced simultaneously under the production process of Creative Comic Collection? 3. How do Creative Comic Collection editors gain their professionality and irreplaceability in relationship networks, while most of the members were lack of practical manga editing experiences?
In this research, in-depth interviews, textual analysis, policy analysis were used to explore Creative Comic Collection editors’ work in practice. Analysis reveals that during the publication production process, actors constructed and reconstructed composite skills and knowledge by bringing their existing expertise, connections, and tastes into relationship networks. This thesis indicates that among the producing processes, in addition to manga publications, actors’ own subjects with agency, and a new concept of Taiwan are both “produced”.
