Zhou Shoujuan is one of the major influential writers in Mandarin Duck and Butterfly School (Butterfly School) in 1920s and 30s as well as editors-in-chief of various journals. His publications are quite outstanding; therefore, there are quite a lot researches on his publications, such as Violet etc. However, very few of the publications focused on his early career as editor, particularly on his initiative Half-Moon, Chou’s first and significantly independent published journal. This is a hot research topic before the reformation of Violet, which revealed the aesthetics of the Chou’s thought and his idea of having a bridge of arts and leisure. In Half-Moon, Chou demonstrated Shanghai culture, gender issues, and a platform for Butterfly School interaction. It certainly became a major channel for those who expected to understand the development of the Butterfly School in the 1920s. This study focused on the literature and culture in Half-Moon, in which area that were not known to the public, expecting to cover those early stage in his editor career, in order to reveal the extension and transformation of his thinking of editing. In addition, it would be easier to find out the specialty of the Half-Moon. Through looking into the characteristics the Half-Moon, this study revealed Chou’s creation of the myth of the Violet, which depicted the characters of those who lived in the metropolitan of Shanghai, the living standard, and the mix of the new and old-fashioned way of life. Moreover, Half-Moon also demonstrated the fighting for being a leader between Butterfly School and the those belonged to New Literature. Finally, this study also covered the content in Purple Grape, one of the painting-related newspaper at that time. This not only complemented the characteristics of Chou’s early editing experience, but added more graphic image for understanding.
