The study investigates the structural effect of innovative capabilities on firm performance in the catch-up economies. Based on the literature review, the study attempts to propose a complete spectrum of innovative capabilities, reflecting value chain activities in the catch-up economies. Three types of innovative capabilities are identified, namely, technological capability, design capability, and business process capability. Although both the value chain view and the innovation performance measurement literature suggest that there is potentially a sequential and structural relationship between innovative capabilities and firm performance. However, their structural relationship remains ambiguous. The study attempts to propose a structural model between innovative capabilities and performance. Based on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the dataset of the firms’ technological capability (e.g., utility patens), design capability (e.g., design patents) and business process capability (e.g., business method patents) from Taiwan Information and Communication Technology (ICT) public traded firms in the period of 2007–2014 is collected. Five research hypotheses are developed. The empirical results indicate that there exists a structural, moderated mediating relationship between three innovative capabilities and firm performance, in which business process capability plays a mediating role and design capability plays a moderating one in the structural relationship. Some managerial implications for effectively integrating innovative capabilities are suggested.
