Despite growing technical research in the Internet of Things (IoT), there is a lack of literature engaging with the transformational mechanism of strategical analysis for organizations. The perceptible gap in strategy literature is the motivation for our study. The rise of IoT has posed serious challenges to traditional industries whose activities are usually institutionalized to some degree to rigidities. In this paper, we provide these organizations with a paradigm which is useful to the pursuit of transformation and modernity. Based on qualitative research procedures, we examine the best firms that have intelligently implemented strategies regarding IoT, which include Schneider Electric, Siemens, Bosch, General Electric, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, Arburg, Festo, Toyota, Hitachi, and Panasonic. Our extensive study of the best firms reveals the principles on which they’re built. In so doing, we thus distill our findings into six lessons for long-standing traditional industries: Nurture and exploit core competencies; Identify Optimal strategic positioning in a dynamic environment; Build simple rules that guide through complexity; Forge strategic alliances and build networks; Implement open innovation through cross-boundaries thinking; Resonate with target audience to acquire key resources. Our study provides important implications for research on institutional transition, organizational innovation, R&D strategy, as well as managerial practices. We conclude holistic strategies in regard to the mechanism of shortening the gap between tradition and innovation which could be further implemented in different and diverse fields when the old meets the new.
