The study of the "The Mandarin Duck and Butterfly" magazines paid most of the attention to Shanghai, followed by the Beijing and Tianjin regions, but Guangzhou actually kept with the times in 1920s and 1930s. In 1933, popular writers in Xiguan area of Guangzhou issued "Guangzhou Saturday", which contained a large number of romantic fictions, humorous articles, social experiences, and commercial advertisements. The magazine strived to readability, popularization and entertainment of the content, providing the readers with more multicultural and diversified knowledge as well as broadening their horizons. In addition,"Guangzhou Saturday" can be seen as the sign of the migration and innovation of recreation magazines which started and thrived from Shanghai since the beginning of Republican-era(1911). This article aims to present the popular literature of "Guangzhou Saturday", which has been neglected before. Under the mutual reference of internal literary texts and external social texts, this dissertation will represent and analyze the leisure, romance and other characteristics in the magazines,outlining the elementary features and operating mechanisms to present the whole real state of the publication. Then, I will refer to the publications of " The Mandarin Duck and Butterfly" in Shanghai area as well as other similar magazines in Guangzhou in the same period,hoping to restore the setting of the publication of those magazines of "The Mandarin Duck and Butterfly" in Guangzhou between 1920 to 1940,and have a better understanding of the richer local characteristics in the field of Guangzhou Popular Literature. At the same time, I will explore the contribution that "Guangzhou Saturday" made,including the group of popular literature writers in Guangzhou, the construction and practice of literature theory area,and sort out the meaningful literary historical context of this area.
