本文主要立足於2015年7月至8月與2016年5月至9月期間在新疆維吾爾自治區進行的田野調查工作，討論在特定情境下被暫時性地建構起來的，作為意義系統的，並且結構化了的維吾爾語和漢語的語言平行世界。這一語言平行世界的形成主要是基於語言作為物的力量，即可以作用於語言使用者的情緒和行動的能動性，因此促成語言使用者在特定情境下對於語言邊界和社會戲劇的展演。區別出不同語言世界的是位於其間的「前沿地帶」（frontier）。通過一系列民族誌呈現，本文捨棄了以往把「認同」解構為文化的研究路徑，指出語言才是背後的驅動力量；另外，本文旨在與Victor Turner的社會戲劇（social drama）理論對話，描繪在違背規則以及受到規範制約的社會關係後的危機，不一定是破碎和失序的，也有可能是表面上更為平和的暫時狀態。要改善當代新疆的維漢跨文化交往現狀，達成社會長治久安，則必須關注在背後起著決定性作用的語言的力量，並在此基礎上處理好不同情境下的語言平行世界，推進對等的維吾爾語和漢語的雙語教育。

Based on 7-months of fieldwork in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, this thesis discusses parallel worlds of Uyghur and Mandarin language in contemporary Xinjiang. As an object, language has an agency to impact language users, both mentally and physically. Under the influence of agency in language, most parallel worlds are directly constructed by language users who intentionally manipulate language boundaries and social drama in certain situations. It is the frontier that finally divides each language world. The ethnographic details in this thesis aim to shift the notion of identity away from culture and towards language, which is actually the driving force of identity construction and negotiation. This thesis also provides a new perspective from which to consider Victor Turner’s social drama theory; namely, crisis does not always refer to a disrupted or fragmentized status, and instead may temporarily exist as a peaceful and well-organized structure. In order to improve the current situation of Han-Uyghur intercultural interactions in contemporary Xinjiang, more attention must be paid to the agency in language. On this basis, parallel worlds of Uyghur and Mandarin language, and bilingual education, should also be further appropriately manipulated, and promoted.
