這篇論文同時也揭發了十八世紀當代哲學家，大衛·休默及依曼努爾·康德，兩位哲學家偏重情感或理智較重要性，相異的哲學觀點。身為一位經驗論者，休默強調理智已變成情感與熱情元素的奴隸，被驅使著。珍·奧斯汀這三本小說鮮明地刻劃女性不懈努力地在生活中，保持情感與理智之間的平衡。因此，情感與理智挑戰了人類的知識論，造就許多人解決兩種元素之間存在的許多矛盾。

This thesis proposes to explore Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice and Love & Friendship through the contour of study of eighteenth-century feeling, notably those qualities related to her fictional heroines as well as femininity around Austen’s time. For Austen, reason and feeling must keep to the balance for marital felicity. What is foregrounded in the novel, namely, sense and sensibility, therefore needs to be complementary instead of contradictory.
This thesis also explores the contemporary philosophers of eighteenth-century, like David Hume’s and Immanuel Kant’s, diversified thoughts on feeling and reason. As an empiricist, Hume focuses on human’s reason becoming the slave of feeling and passion. Jane Austen’s three novels have vividly portrayed women’s tenacious effort to keep the balance between feeling and reason in life. Therefore, feeling and reason challenge much human’s epistemology, from which many people need to resolve the ambiguities in between.
